The Aspen Music Festival...Where Top Muscians, Artists and Teachers Perform

By : RC Rougeux
In 1949, the school and Aspen Music Festival was founded by visionaries Walter and Elizabeth Paepcke. They believed the combination of art and nature improves peoples souls. Hence, the location of the beautiful Rocky Mountains. Over 50 years later, their inspirations cover every aspect of the festival and school. From all over the world 800 young musicians attend this renowned school.

Also, every year the school invites more than 70 guest artists and 165 teachers from across the world to attend to and teach the students and also perform. This gives the students opportunities to perform as participants along with some of the greatest musicians in the world as part of their training. It has inspired fledging musicians to mature into some of the most gifted and creative classical artists in the world, from Paris to New York, from Tokyo to Rome. In fact, its one of the world's premier schools and learning grounds for pre-professional musicians...bar none!

The Aspen Music Festival is in a class of its own. This event takes place every summer in the Aspen area. It's a classical music festival and is internationally renowned. It presents excellent, beautiful music in a small Rocky Mountain town setting. This nine-week program encourages the students to develop their talent and skills through the classes they attend by playing and performing. Master classes, recitals, individual lessons and concerts are all part of the curriculum and last the entire summer while they are there.

It's important to point out the lessons for learning are not only limited to the classroom. The students also perform in concerts in which the students perform with their instructors in the Aspen Chamber Symphony and Aspen Festival Orchestras. In addition, students are members of three orchestras maintained by the school. This renowned school alumni fills many music positions who perform in opera houses, school faculties, in music, and other top-tier orchestras across the globe. David Zinman is the music director who has spent half a century in the Aspen Music Festival and school. This year the students will celebrate his birthday along with the birthdays of composers Mozart and Shostakovich.

Normally Aspen is thought of as only a winter ski vacation area. But, as you can see there's much more to this beautiful town in the Rocky's than just skiing. It has the beautiful 2,050-seat Benedict Music Tent, This beautifully sounding and award-winning permanent structure debuted in the year 2002 to provide acoustics to the beautiful classical music. So, come on out. If you think you may be interested going to the music festival many of the concerts and events are free. Some cost $70.00, but there are quite a few recitals and performances in the 9$ to $42 range. Of course, if you tired of hearing music, there's always the famous Aspen nightlife...and celebrities and much more welcoming the new and seasoned vacationer.

Hot Destination Caribbean

By : Francis Lua
When it comes to vacation destinations that are all about having fun in the sun, nothing beats the Caribbean. Situated just to the south and east of Mexico and north and west of Venezuela, South America where the waters are clear and the sun is hot, a Caribbean travel vacation has something for everyone whether you are one for water sports, hiking, swimming, diving, and just plain frolicking in its white sand beaches.

But traveling to a hot destination like the Caribbean can be quite expensive, and for this reason, many people balk at the idea of a Caribbean travel. Indeed, why spend so much on a single vacation when you could visit much cheaper vacation destinations? Never mind if these places do not even come close to what a Caribbean travel entails.

What if we told you that there is a much better way to spend a vacation? What if we told you that you can go on a Caribbean travel vacation without having to spend a lot of your hard earned money?

A Caribbean travel for less. Now, there is a thought.

Below are four chic hotels where you can keep the island flavor high and the prices at a bare minimum while on a Caribbean travel vacation.

Flash and Glamour Anguilla

The most northerly of the Leeward Islands in the Lesser Antilles, Anguilla is an island known for the flash and glamour of many of it resorts. For this reason, the island is a popular Caribbean travel destination for many visitors who want to bask in the compelling charm, romance, and excitement that the islands are known for.

Rendezvous Bay Hotel and Villas may not have all that flash and glamour, but it lacks in that department, the hotel makes up for their own location and fantastic rates starts at hundred dollars while villa costs few hundred dollars. This Caribbean travel resort hotel offers rooms, all sitting directly on fifty palm laden acres of fronting a one and half mile long sugary sand beach. The resort has been recently renovated, offering white tile floors and simple rattan furnishings, and is divided among a dozen low rise buildings.

Another worthy hotel group is Ku, its name meaning sacred place in the Arawak Indian language. With room rates starting at two hundred ninety five dollar, these twenty seven suite hotels overlooks Shoal Bay East and are South Beach Chic, with minimalist white decoration, air conditioning, and full kitchens.

Honeymoon Favorite Antigua

Located just south of another popular Caribbean travel destination of Barbuda. Antigua markets itself as a luxury Caribbean travel escape. Its many hotels and resorts located around the coastline are all favorites when it comes to honeymooning while on a Caribbean travel.

While you do not have to be on your honeymoon to enjoy Antigua island charm, the Cocobay Resort location on a hillside facing the Caribbean Sea makes for a very romantic atmosphere. The idyllic hotel is made of forty seven Creole style cottages in soft pastel hues with rates that are very affordable at two hundred forty dollar.

Hybrid Beat Bahamas

If you want a decidedly patrician vibe during your Caribbean travel vacation, then the Landing, a seven room inn on Harbor Island is exactly for you. There are no televisions, no phones, or Internet connections things that distract you from the sheer beauty of the beach a few blocks away. And for only two hundred forty dollar, you can get one of the bay view rooms, which offer the best views of the harbor and comes with crisp white linens, terraces, and four poster beds.

Better Place for Vacation

By : Francis Lua
There is no superior starting place for your travel to Spain than the grand and enchanting streets of Barcelona. There is never a dull moment in this city that literally never sleeps, especially in the summer months. Barcelona is studded with the unmistakable modernism of Antoni Gaudi, who single handedly landed the city on the architectural map. A stroll down the grand avenue Passeig de Gracia will take you directly in front of both Casa Batllo and Casa Mila, which are incredible feats of art and design and fully accessible to the public. Make reservations to have cocktails and watch the sun set on the Alice In Wonderland like rooftop of Casa Mila only available for the summer season. Wind your way through the narrow passages of the Gothic Quarter, the oldest part of town, until you find the overwhelming and unmistakable Gothic Cathedral just remember to watch your pockets.

Just an hour north of Barcelona in the town of Figueres is Northern Spain most interesting and unique museum. The Dali museum is so extraordinary because it was designed and constructed by the artist himself and the collection of his works is unsurpassed anywhere else in the world. The coastline north of Barcelona, extending to the French border, is known as the Costa Brava and is one of the Mediterranean most exclusive and beautiful vacation destinations. Additionally, Catalonia countryside is spotted with superb Spanish wine vineyards and olive groves. Once you fall in love with Barcelona, it will be extremely difficult to leave; however, there are a few other gems in the north to explore in order to have really traveled Spain.

As a port city for the Romans, Barcelona early residents settled in over 2000 years ago but outside the museums you will find little evidence of the city Roman past. For a brief time, in the 400, the city became a Visigoth capital under King Ataulf. By the 19th century, during the rise of Art Nouveau architecture and modern town planning, Barcelona experienced a rapid increase in population.

While in the Gothic Quarter you can see building of the middle ages, it is Barcelona Art Nouveau architecture that enhances the city uniqueness.
For those who are planning to visit Barcelona taking a long break will be the right option so that you would not miss anything. One could easily spend 2 or 3 weeks in Barcelona and still not give the city its proper due.

The Niagara Falls Fantasy

By : Kadence Buchanan
Located on the north part of the western United States boarders and the south part of the eastern Canadian ones, one of most spectacular natural sites is the group of large water falls, worldwide famous as the Niagara Falls. The breathtaking scenery is composed by three water falls, the American Falls, the Bridal Veil Falls, and the Horseshoe Falls, which pour five million cubic feet of water every minute. Extremely wide, although not very high, the Niagara Falls is area has become over the years a tourist location for people of all ages, who visit this part of the world in order to admire the natural forces all year around.

But apart from hosting some extremely successful tourist resorts, the Niagara Falls is also a hydroelectric source of power. Since the three falls are shared by three cities, all named Niagara Falls-two in the New York area and one in Ontario, Canada-the citizens of those areas have relied on the Niagara Falls power to generate the required amount of energy and serve their needs, since the early 18th century.

According to scientists, the Niagara Falls is the outcome of the Wisconsin glaciations period, which ended 9,000 years ago. During that era, the slowly moving and melting glaciers crushed the earth's surface and formed lakes or rivers, managing to connect today's Canadian coast with the northern part of what we currently know as the country of United States. Since they were first seen, Niagara Falls has succeeded in attracting people's interest on the natural phenomena that led to their gigantic form. Visited annually by millions of people who are excited to be surrounded by these huge water-flowing natural creations, the Niagara Falls gained their remarkable reputation mainly in 19th century, when the area was first recognized as being a preferred tourist attraction and also as an extremely beautiful natural phenomenon originating from the earth's glaciations period during Ice Age.

Present Niagara Falls visitors are able to cross the Canadian-US boarders often in order to admire its magnificent imagery from specially designed sitting areas or the Niagara Suspension and Whirlpool Rapids bridges. The Niagara Falls is admired from practically either side of the Canadian and US boarder. Although the US side, at about 70 feet, is much smaller in size compared to the Canadian falls at 170 feet, all those who have visited either of the two areas admit to have experienced a unique water-falling phenomenon and a great power-giving force. Those who live and work in the nearby cities support, that Niagara Falls is an excellent opportunity to "get cozy" with nature, while relaxing one's eyes and rejuvenating both body and soul.

Detroit: The City Cars Built

By : Ann Knapp
As the automotive capital of the world and home to General Motors, the Ford Motor Company, and Chrysler, Detroit is a city built by cars. From the stunning mansions built by auto barons to sprawling automotive facilities, the automobile has left its mark the city and its people. Detroiters love their cars. Events such as the North American International Auto Show, the Grand Prix, and the Woodward Dream Cruise attract record crowds. Still more head to the racing excitement of Michigan International Speedway for Indy car action.

Detroit's booming new industry created new jobs which drew people from throughout Europe and African Americans from the South for work. Between 1900 and 1930, the city's population grew from 265,000 to more than 1.5 million. Led by the auto barons, Detroit's cultural scene also blossomed. The downtown flourished with new buildings, museums and theaters built by the world's top architects. One of the most enjoyable ways to experience Detroit's automotive heritage is by exploring the wealth it created. And in Detroit, there's no shortage of wealth to explore.

A visit to the Model T Automotive Heritage Complex reveals where it all began. The birthplace of the automobile assembly line, the Heritage Complex is the only example of an early Detroit auto factory open to visitors. Guests also learn about the lives of the typical autoworkers in 1908, including their 10-hour workdays and 6-day workweeks.

Next, experience the luxury of the auto elite with a tour of Fair Lane, Henry and Clara Ford's beautiful country home estate. Named one of "America's 10 grandest mansions" by Budget Travel Magazine, this 31,000-square-foot, six-level, 56-room home is where the Fords entertained some of the world's most influential people.

Afterward, visit the Edsel and Eleanor Mansion in scenic Grosse Pointe Shores. At the home of Henry Ford's only child, Edsel, visitors see original antique furnishings, an impressive collection of fine and decorative art, and much more in the breathtaking 60-room Cotswold mansion. Visitors may also stroll the 87 acres of lakefront gardens and grounds.

The Ford family was not the only auto player in town. Lawrence Fisher was one of the founders of Fisher Body Company and President of Cadillac Motors. The Fisher Mansion estate was considered one of the most lavish residences of its time with its gold and silver leafing accenting the ceilings and moldings. The black walnut and rosewood parquet floors are an impressive sight as well.

Spectacular Meadow Brook Hall in Rochester was the home of Matilda Dodge Wilson, and her second husband, lumber baron Alfred G. Wilson. Completed in 1929, Meadow Brook Hall is considered an American castle and is among the finest homes in the country. The 88,000-square-foot Tudor revival-style mansion is filled with authentic furnishings, priceless art and striking antiques. The estate's 16 gardens and 42 urns surrounding the hall are a testament to the talented design work of English landscape artist Arthur Davidson.

Detroit's endless auto heritage stories can also be found in the city's area museums. The Detroit Historical Museum in Midtown recreates the cobblestone streets of Old Detroit, along with its neighborhoods which were shaped by the auto industry. The museum's Transportation History Collection focuses solely on the products of Detroit-based companies, as well as the tastes and forces that shaped the American transportation market. Currently, the museum is building their collection of the 100 most significant Detroit cars, some of which are on view.

Across the street is the Detroit Institute of Arts, which was once saved from closing by Edsel and Eleanor Ford, who also helped establish its remarkable collection. Edsel Ford, president of the Detroit Arts Commission, commissioned the famous Diego Rivera "Detroit Industry" mural contained within the museum. The Firestone and Dodge families were also major patrons of the museum. He was also an early collector of African art and his contributions were a part of the core of the original DIA African art collection.

The Automotive Hall of Fame preserves the history of mobility by celebrating the creativity, toil and genius of its makers. Visitors follow the "Driving Spirit" as he leads them through time to observe the many people who have left their mark in the auto industry.

The Walter P. Chrysler Museum in Auburn Hills sits beneath the shadow of the Daimler Chrysler World Headquarters. The museum houses more than 65 vehicles showcasing the company's American heritage interspersed with displays and historical exhibits.

Luxury Cruising: 3 Myths About Cruises and Why You Shouldn’t Believe Them

By : Nikki LeRoi
Cruising has become a top recreational choice for many people, however, if you are hesitating to take a cruise because of some common myths, then you are possibly missing out on a great vacation experience. Let’s go over each myth and see what the real deal is.

Only old people go on cruises

Several years ago, cruises were heavily populated with elderly people, since they always had plenty of time on their hands to take a leisurely cruise for weeks on end. Visions of old ladies with blue hair and countless shuffle board games are not appealing to the younger set.

These days, you’ll be happy to know, that most cruise passengers are younger people. The elderly only make up a small percentage of passengers. More people in their teens and 20s are also going on cruises. In fact, you might have a hard time keeping up with all the activities geared towards the younger set.

I’ll be forced to do everything on a set schedule

It used to be that all meals and activities stuck to a very rigid schedule. Breakfast at 9am, lunch at 12pm, dinner at 6pm, etc. This is mostly a thing of the past. While you’ll find that major meals are still served between certain times, there are a lot of eating alternatives where you can grab a bite to eat or sit down for a nice dinner, without eating in the main dining room.

Activities happen at all hours of the day, so if you want to sleep in, there will still be plenty for you to do when you wake up.

There’s not enough to do – I’ll be bored stiff

It used to be a well known fact that the entertainment on board a cruise ship was pretty pathetic: table tennis, card games, shuffleboard, and reading a good book was about the extent of the good times.

Now days, there are enough activities to keep even the most energetic person busy around the clock. Dancing, sports, games, physical exercise, swimming, shows, are just a few of the activities available on board the ship.

When the ship lands at an exciting destination, you’ll be on your way to having the time of your life, including site seeing and partaking of all the fun things you’ve planned to do while visiting new places and tourist attractions.

You see, there’s no reason to put off planning your very own cruise vacation right now. Today’s cruise ships are pretty much floating cities, with all of the attractions and accommodations that any well traveled city would have. In fact, it’ll probably take you 10 fun-packed cruises before you start getting bored. Now that’s a whole bunch of fun.

This will ensure you don't miss your ship by getting caught in traffic or any number of problems with your flight. I also suggest you fly-in or drive a day before your cruise and stay at a hotel the night before. If you’re driving, some hotels allow you to park your car for free in a special lot for the duration of your cruise. So for the price of parking at the port (normally $10 a day) you can book a night at the hotel and relax. The hotel normally drives you to and from the cruise terminal for free before and after your cruise.

Use a Porter/Bellman when available - Your on vacation, so be sure to use the resources the hotel offers. The hotel will be able to transport your bags to and from the lobby. Once at the cruise terminal a porter will offer to take your bags from your car (hotel shuttle or taxi cab) to the ship. The suggested tip is $1 per bag, this is well worth it and you will save time, energy and maybe even some future back pain. The next time you will see your bags is in your cabin.

Pick the right Cruise Line and Ship for you - Be sure to learn about the cruise vacation product your buying. This is a major purchase so do your homework with your travel agent and also via brochures, cruise line websites and read ship reviews. Your choice will greatly affect things such as the ships decor & ambiance, the level of service from crew, the quality of food in the restaurants and more.

Choose the Correct Cabin - Many modern cruise ships hold 3000+ passengers. Unlike a hotel you can actually choose your exact cabin. Will your cabin be the cheapest cabin available, so you can get onboard at the lowest price or will it be something more luxurious? What are your expectations? Is it price or comfort? If you want the best experience aboard your cruise I suggest a balcony cabin. It will cost you on average $30 more per-person, per-day but, it’s worth it. It used to be said that passengers don't spend much time in their cabin aboard a cruise. This is now a myth; passengers are now spending an ever more increasing amount of time in their cabins. Why is this you ask? It’s because the modern ships have much larger cabin and some upwards of 80% outside cabins with balconies. A balcony cabin rewards you with allowing you to step outside 24/7 and watch the ship sail through the seas, into ports and hear the sounds of the waves. You can also look at the wildlife, sunsets, and more, anytime; even in your pajamas if desired. You can even enjoy the free room service by having breakfast or any other meal on your balcony. These are things you just can't fully do by booking a standard inside cabin or ocean view (window only) cabin.

Participate and Attend - Your cruise vacation is going to offer you many ports of call. You will have both excursions on land and also many shows and events onboard you’re floating resort. The best way to fully experience this is by booking exciting shore excursions and attending the shows, events and classes you're interested in. Be sure to book excursions either before you sail or the day you get onboard as some of the best shore excursions sell out fast. Then relax and have an experience of a lifetime.

Try the Specialty Restaurants onboard - Many new ships now offer reservation only specialty restaurants onboard. These normally come with a per-person charge but, they are definitely worth it. Prices can range from $15 or more per person. The level of service and food are normally incredible, so please consider one of these options for one night onboard your cruise. Each cruise line varies offerings so check with your travel agent and your cruise line brochure. Some examples are Royal Caribbean's (Portofino's and Chops Grill), Carnival Cruise Lines (Supper Club, Nick & Nora's, etc), Princess Cruise Lines' (Sabatini's), Holland America Line's (Pinnacle Grill), Celebrity Cruise Lines (Varies Per ship), Norwegian Cruise Line (Numerous Offerings), etc. Be sure to make a reservation shortly after boarding as these specialty restaurants are indeed special and reservations fill up fast by those in the know. Some guests even eat at these restaurants several times during a normal cruise, because it’s just that good.

Read your ships Newsletter/Daily planner - To get the most of your vacation read your ships daily activity sheet when you get it (normally placed in your cabin the night before). It's a good idea to find events that you are interested in doing and schedule them within your day. Be sure to also know what all your dining options are onboard (Where and when are they?). Your cruise will normally be seven nights long, so the more you know about the services onboard your floating resort (AKA Cruise Ship) the better your time onboard will be. This may seem obvious but, some cruisers miss out on things because they didn't read the daily planner and know it was available and/or scheduled.

Kiss the Ship Good Morning & Good Night - Kissing the ship good morning and good night is advice I was given from a veteran cruiser when I first began cruising. What’s this mean? You basically need to get out of your cabin and walk the outer decks before the rest of the ship wakes up. This time can be as the sunrises and good night when the sunsets. This simply allows you to fully enjoy being at sea. It further lets you enjoy the ship as she sails into a port during these early morning hours. You'll most likely find that only you and a handful of other passengers are up for this wonderful show. You're welcome to go back to bed for a nap but, this morning kiss allows you to experience things most passengers miss by sleeping in. Don't get too busy that you miss the real show given by Mother Nature and experience some of the simple pleasures of life at sea.

The Dolomites Of Italy

By : Denise Hummel
Residents of the Alto Adige region of Italy will tell you that you cannot claim to be true lovers of the mountains if you have not seen the Dolomites. For while every mountain landscape is beautiful in its own way, the Dolomites are like the precious stones of an old family ring -- they have something extra. Perhaps its their position in the heart of Europe, or it may be the pink hues of their sunsets caused by the fact that they were once coral formations that rose up from the seabed 25 million years ago. Maybe it is the host of stories and history they have played witness to, invasions and exodus, as the portal to and from Austria. The colors of the Dolomites make it akin to an enchanted garden: the fresh, verdant meadows framed by the darker greens of the woods, the pink hue of the mountains against the white of the glaciers at their peaks and the sky that resembles a cut canvas with the sharp outline of the peaks against blue sky and white cotton-candy clouds.

Merano is a geographic anomaly. Predominantly German-speaking, it seems to belong to neighboring Austria, but is 70 miles inside Italy, a consequence of the redrawing of borders after World War I. Many street and shop signs are bilingual, but to Germans and Austrians, Merano is still Meran. The architecture of the region is decidedly Tyrolean, with wrought-iron balconies making way for classic wooden carved ones characteristic of the Austrian and Swiss alps, a change in shape of church bell-towers that is almost Byzantine, and food that leans towards Italy's northern neighbors rather than the traditional Italian dishes.

Bisected by the Passirio River, which pours into the Adige, the city of 32,000 residents combines red-roofed arcaded buildings, historic churches and flower-embroidered parks. Dominating the riverfront promenade is the Kurbad built in 1914, which will open in September 2005, offering a full array of sulfur and radon baths, mudpacks, saunas and bathing pools.

Merano, which traces its history as a settlement some 2,000 years before Christ, is tucked into the intersection of four mountain valleys spilling down from lower Alpine ranges. Its protected location, about 1,000 feet above sea level and shielded from the north, east and west, has given Merano a climate mild enough to nurture vineyards as well as palm trees, oleander and fruit trees that blossom against a backdrop of snowy peaks.

Merano has been famous as far back as the1500s for its "milk cures" in the spring and "grape cures" in the fall for digestive disorders. These recuperative remedies kept a constant flow of tourism until the region, especially during the 1800s when "Sisi," beloved empress of Austria, became enamored with these cures. Subsequently, Merano was ravaged by World War I and II and the tourism trade did not return until sometime in the 1960s. For me, the magic of Merano is the beauty of its historic piazza's and pedestrian areas, including its café-lined river on one side and lush park on the other. We enjoyed a wonderful lunch with a complicated ice-cream dessert that was almost too beautiful to eat, while listening to the sound of the river and gazing at the 360-degree view of the mountains. Later attempted to shed a few well-earned calories by walking on the opposite side in the public park.

Among the many beautiful vacation accommodations is the beautiful Castello Schloss Labers situated on a hill looking down over the vineyards and up at the Alps. For a long time, the history of Schloss Labers remained shrouded in mystery. A castle built in the 11th century, it has been owned by the Stapf-Neubert family since 1885. During World War II, however, it was used by an SS Task Force to launder counterfeit British Pounds. "Operation Bernhard," as it was called, was a scheme to enrich the Third Reich and undermine the British economy by a massive counterfeiting of the Pound Sterling and ultimately exchanging fake banknotes for real ones. At that time, the owners of the castle, the Stapf-Neubert family, were forced out. They took refuge with neighbors for the duration of the operation and were not permitted access to the castle. Then, as suddenly as they arrived, the SS Task Force disappeared in 1945. Apparently, Colonel Friedrich Schwend, the mastermind, was taken into custody by American counterintelligence and avoided prosecution by becoming an Allied informant. After one year in this role, he and his wife slipped out of Europe on false passports and settled in Lima, Peru, where he ultimately lived out his life in the open.

When the Stapf-Neubert family crept back in after the Nazi exodus, they knew not what they would find. It was not surprising that on further investigation it seemed that the Germans had managed to take just about everything. In the following years, the family engaged workers to dig through some of the basement walls of the castle, wondering if they might have hidden any of the counterfeit British pounds, or anything else that might shed light on this intriguing piece of history. Ultimately, all that they were able to find were two cards from a deck of cards, determined by archeologists to have been used recreationally by German troops.

The castle has been a hotel since 1885, surrounded by vineyards, and it was there that we ventured to enjoy a weekend in the Dolomiti (Dolomites). The stout front door opens to a large entrance hall with pikes and muskets on the wall and archways leading to a stone staircase with an iron balustrade. The dining-room is graced by a grand piano and classical music was wafting through the halls, along with the savory smells of dinner as we entered. Our room was "king-sized", spacious enough to swallow up the large wooden beds, tables and armoire that might once have served knights and damsels, contrasted with a modern bath. The view was breath-taking. We looked out over the chapel, which was originally utilized as a chapel, then converted into a pool-room in 1890 and back again into a quaint Catholic chapel in 1990 used for services on Saturday night. Beyond it, was a view of the terrace, with its white umbrellas shading wrought iron tables and chairs with fluffy cushions. And beyond it further still is a spectacular view of the Alps, Val D'Ultimo and the Dolomites. Incredibly romantic and perfect for couples, the castle is also surprisingly "kid-friendly." Our children loved playing chess in the dining room, right next to the Grand Piano and on Sunday had the opportunity to play tennis, ping pong, and billiards, before going on a hike on the Castle's property.

The rest of Castello Schloss Labers' 35 guest rooms and halls also retained a medieval air. There were vaulted ceilings, heavy exposed beams and rooms trimmed in pine and chestnut. The corridor floors creaked, and under the red carpet the wide staircase was of granite. Dinner that night was elegant. A princely atmosphere with vaulted mahogany ceilings that looked like an inverted Scandinavian ship, revealing the Stapf-Neubert family's Danish roots and taste in ornamentation. We began with Lasagnette mit weissem spargel, Prager Schinken, or rather in Italian, Lasagnette con asparaghi bianchi, prosciutto di Praga, or if you prefer the English spelling, Lasagna with white asparagus and ham from Prague. We continued with Scampi with Curry and Pineapple, with roasted potatoes and cauliflower and finished with lemon sorbet. Our choices included other tasteful blends of Italian and Tyrolean cuisine, befitting the region. Dinner was accompanied by the Castle's own label wine, Schiava di Merano, a product of their own vineyards that surround the property and are cultivated by the niece of owners Joerg and Beatrice Stapf.

Indeed, one of the notable advantages of this region is the plethora of fine wines. We sampled some of them at the Enoteca Claudia in the Piazza del Duomo: a delicate Chardonnay 2003, St. Michael-Eppan, a more robust Sudtirol-Alto Adige Eisacktaler Sylvaner 2004, and an equally tasty wine of the same grape by Muller Thurgau 2001. Then on to red wines, a Sudtirol St. Magdalener Classico 2004 and a Sudtiroler Lagrein Dunkel Grieser Reserve that was superb.

Our second dinner in Merano, a significant contrast from the first, was enjoyed at Kallmunz Restaurant right in the center of town at Piazza Rena. It is a combination of Italian and Japanese cuisine, completely uncharacteristic of the region, but surprisingly highly acclaimed by locals. Chief Luigi Ottaiano has teamed with three Japanese collaborators to produce a menu which combines the freshest of Italian ingredients with a decidedly Japanese flavor, and an elegant presentation in a modern, minimalist environment. Our dinner was accompanied by a white wine, a Sauvignon Graf Von Meran, directly from the vineyards of Merano and it was splendid.

A more traditional alternative, also acclaimed by locals, but which we did not have opportunity to try, would be Leiter AmWaal in the neighboring town of Plars/Algund. A typical Tyrolean menu enjoyed in a historic dining room.

After you've relaxed in a local spa, finished with the pool at Castello Schloss Labers, and you're ready for some adventure, get in the car and drive from Merano to Bolzano. There, by following signs to Canazei, then Arabba and ultimately Cortina D'Ampezzo, you will surround yourself with some of the most beautiful scenery in the world. Around every hair-pin turn, and there are many, another spectacular scene awaits. We shot no less than ten roles of film, and then only by showing incredible restraint. In May the foliage was literally exploding, green fields of grass, consumed by thousands of wild-flowers -- yellows, purples and whites. Alpine chalet's hanging precariously cliff-side as if they belonged more to the sky, than the earth; glacier-topped mountains in the background, pasture-land and vineyards in the foreground. Then, just past Arabba and onto Cortina, the pink-tinted Dolomites, still tinged with snow, stark and craggy cutting the blue sky. Locals will tell you that the drive is 2 ½ hours. Please count on 5. It's a full day experience. Come armed with a picnic lunch. When you arrive in Cortina D'Ampezzo, have a gelato and look around at the shops. Try to show restraint as the prices are about as high as the mountain chain. Then make your way back to Merano by the quick northerly route that is mostly two lane "highway." You'll get back just in time for a shower and dinner.

Should you be lucky enough to have an extra day, a great educational experience for the kids involves visiting the "old dude," as we affectionately nicknamed him. The old dude, better known as the "Ice Man," is a 5,300-year-old mummy found in 1991 by German hikers on their honeymoon. They discovered him sticking out of a melting glacier high in the Tirol mountains. Scientists have yet to determine whether he was of Alpine origin or merely trying to cross the Alps. His equipment and one of his last meals seem to have come from lower-altitude valleys, nearer Verona. New forensic analysis in 2001 demonstrated that he was apparently shot in the shoulder with an arrow shortly before he died. Was he ambushed? Was it a hunting accident? War? The figure was accompanied by a flint dagger, a copper ax, a quiver with flint-tipped arrows, shoes, some remnants of his clothing and a bear-skin hat. It is a fascinating exhibit for the whole family, but children in particular, will be in awe of this magnificent find.

As family destinations go, Merano is clearly one of our favorites. There is something for every member of the family, regardless of energy level or mood. When you you're surrounded by the Dolomite mountains, all other pleasures are secondary.

Andalucia - Undiscovered Beauty

8-Tips for Packing and Traveling Lite

By : Sudhir Sharma
How-to Pack and Travel Lite
In this day and age of traveling echolalia, there are a few packing tactics to employ. To cut out an extra thirty to forty minutes at the arriving airport, start with packing small luggage. Since carry-ones can not exceed a linear dimension of 45 inches, you can escape the fiasco of the baggage terminal by simply packing and traveling light. To learn how to pack all your needs into one suitcase, read more.

Use the following pithy packing tips to make your travel light:

Make a list. Compose a pack list. Be sure to coordinate shirts and blouses with bottoms. To maximize your traveling wardrobe fashion savoir faire, stick with solids and versatile basics. Rule-out any clothes that do not match other items.

Roll ‘me up please. The best way to fit all your clothes is by rolling pants and shirts. First fold each item in half. Then simply roll. To try to maintain any creases, start on the bulkiest end of the article of clothing.

Gear up. How to make an awe-inspiring impression out of a basic or mundane outfit? For the most glam appeal, accessorize with a vibrant tie (for him) or a florid scarf (for her). Multihued accessories can liven up just about any attire.

Minimize bulk. After you check for space, edit outfits – ruthlessly. Try to pack micro fibers with wrinkle and stain free comfort. With most of your attire, stay in the same color scheme – in case you have to layer up for warmth.

Employ shoe smarts. For men, any leather rubber-soled shoes can make the day and night transition, easy. For woman, a pair of flip-flops, satrapy sandals and comfy wedges can serve all casual – chic dressing needs.

Put under garments on the top. To reduce the embarrassment of under garments becoming the side show attraction of the open luggage scan, place all panties in a plastic bag free of any clippers, lighters or other questionable paraphernalia. For expedient security review, place the transparent bag on top of your other items so security can access the bag without ruining your efficient packing method.

Lose Extra Baggage. Leave the heavy travel guide at home. Duplicate important resources to keep your luggage free of extra pounds. Since most hotels and resorts provide irons and blow-dryers --leave yours at home for light travel.

Leave restricted items at home. If you want to make it through security extra fast, avoid any firearms, weapons, box-cutters, scissors, razors, lighters and any other item that may be used in a terrorist situation.

Cruising Australia's Majestic Murray River

By : Graeme Lanham
Cruising is the only way to discover the serene beauty of Australia's largest inland waterway. A Murray River cruise allows you to experience the magic of inland Australia in leisurely comfort.

There's something special about cruising on a large river. It is a peaceful, relaxing voyage of discovery. Australia's longest river, the Murray stretches over 2500km from the Australian Alps to the Southern Ocean.

Like the Mississippi and Rhine, it is an economic and tourist powerhouse. Sadly its future is clouded by drought and climate change.

This mighty river has a catchment covering over 20% of Australia's land mass and supplies most of Adelaide's water as well as a huge fruit and wine industry. The river is also a major tourist attraction and no visit to South Australia would be complete without a boat cruise.

Most Murray River cruises operate out of Adelaide and you have a wide choice. If you wish to spend a few leisurely days on the river, a number of companies run 2 to 4 day cruises, exploring longer stretches and mooring overnight at selected spots. On board meals and accommodation are provided and the beauty and serenity of sunset and sunrise are memorable holiday moments.

If your time is short, a full day tour from Adelaide, including a short river cruise, is your answer. I chose Prime Mini Tours because of the tour features, the price and the fact that you can cruise on the Murray for a full 3 hours. Other cruises only spend an hour on the river and this is insufficient time for you to enjoy the true beauty of this lovely waterway.

Prime is also a small, family run business based on personal attention. They provide tour coach transport to and from the river base at Mannum and have an arrangement with Jester Cruises, the boat operators.

Helen and Geoff were amiable hosts, and as our cruise trundled up the river, we were provided with lunch, while Helen entertained us with a running commentary on the river, its interesting history and its abundant wildlife.

The visual impact is stunning and there was an overwhelming feeling of serenity that only a cruise can provide. Helen pointed out places of interest as other cruise boats, vineyards and numerous varieties of water birds passed by. She also mentioned that as a result of the drought, the river level is constantly dropping and this lifeline, relied upon by so many people, may soon dry up.

Further up the river, the old port town of Echuca is another base for cruises. Echuca is home to many houseboats and they can be hired for as long as you choose. These floating homes are the most comfortable way to explore the region.

Many, including "Luxury 5", provide state-of-art comfort for those seeking more than a Tom Sawyer or Huck Finn adventure. Houseboats can be moored almost anywhere by securing them to a couple of stout trees.

At sunset, you will be enveloped by the tranquility of the bush as the Murray casts its lazy spell. Time to sit on the deck, enjoy a sumptious meal, washed down with a glass of local red and experience the serenity of inland Australia.

The message is clear. If you are visiting this part of Australia, go where the river runs, but do it soon. Experience and enjoy this Australian icon while you can.

Things To Do To Get Ready For Your Cruise

By : Jim Brown
The sailing date for the cruise you booked is drawing near. But before you imagine yourself having the time of your life aboard a cruise line, there are several things that you need to prepare for. Not all of these though shall apply to all cruises.

Three months prior to the sailing date, it is important to check with your travel agent what sort of identification (proof of citizenship or passport) is required for the cruise. Do everything that is necessary like renewing your passport if it is about to expire or replace lost documents (e.g. birth certificate, etc.). Avoid doing it at the last minute which is not only stressful but costly as well. If there are any visas required for certain countries that are part of the cruise's itinerary these should be applied for as well.

Two months prior to the sailing date, make the necessary final payments although your travel agent will be reminding you of the remaining balance if it is due for payment already. Begin planning for the wardrobe you will be bringing. Fit your clothes and check if there are any alterations that need to be done or stains that need to be removed. If you plan to do some shopping for items that you will be bringing with you, it is time to do that shopping now to provide you with ample time to find exactly what you want or to return stuff that you may want exchanged. It is time also to look for a house sitter and a kennel if you have pets at home.

If your kids will not be tagging along with you on the cruise, make the necessary arrangements for childcare and check on their schedules to ensure that they have everything they need while you are gone. If you like, you can tape yourself reading your very young kids a bedtime story so that they will not miss you that much.

A month prior to sailing, check with your travel agent for your airline schedule and make the necessary personal appointments for haircut, etc. If your kids are coming with you, check on what clothes they will have to bring and if they have everything they need. Check on the luggage that you will be bringing if there are destroyed locks or if it needs any repair.

About two weeks prior to the cruise date, get the necessary cruise documents and check if everything is in order (names are spelled accurately, correct sailing date, etc.). If you have questions or there is something that you don't understand, ask your travel agent. Read the cruise's documents.

One week before the sailing date, finalize everything that you will be bringing. Don't forget to bring your camera, batteries and film. Photocopy your passport and ID and leave a copy with a relative or a friend. Leave as well a copy of your itinerary and contact info should it be necessary to contact you. Withdraw the money that you will be bringing with you or arrange for the traveler's checks.

Days before the big sailing day, confirm your flight schedules and check if you have everything in order. Happy sailing!

Treasure Hunting For Opals

By : David Cowley
Opals have been considered a magical precious stone for thousands of years. It is said to help the wearer's psychic powers and to have better and more vivid dreams. Modern Witches and Pagans especially look for black opals, said to enhance any magic spell. But not only are opals rich in myth and magic, they are also really nice to look at. In many ways, they are similar to pearls, but not nearly so expensive.

Although you can buy opals from jewelers, geological shows and "nature" stores and their website equivalents, it's far more fun and magical to find the opal yourself. This is one of the many reasons why opal treasure hunting is becoming a popular activity, especially in Nevada and Oregon, where Bonanza Opal Mines and the Juniper Ridge Fire Opal Mines are.

Finders Keepers

Bonanza Opal Mines have "finders' keepers" days where the general public is allowed to come in, pay a daily fee of less than $50 and keep any and all opals that they find. You are not allowed to dig just anywhere in the mines, however. Some areas are reserved only for shareholders. But hunting for opals is still good in all of the other places of the mines.

Depending on where you choose to hunt for opal, the tools you should bring include Small Hand Rake, Shovel, Pick Axe, Hammer, Bucket, Gloves and Knee pads. You can use the hard rock mining technique which entails use of a pick axe, shovels, and a hammer or your could just rake through the tailing which are bulldozed piles of material removed from the mining area. Many of these mines are in extraordinarily remote areas so be prepared to camp and bring all necessary food, water and mining supplies.

Modern day opal treasure hunters don’t need to travel a huge distance to and from the mines when they need to relax after an invigorating day searching. They are allowed to camp in certain places in Bonanza Opal Mines. There are also shower facilities and a naturally heated pond. Camping and use of the showers is included in your daily fee.

If you like the thrill of the hunt and the beauty of the shifting colors of opals, you may be interested to know that sometimes opportunities come where you can be a Bonanza Opal Mine shareholder. When you become one of only 100 shareholders, then you are allowed to dig in the "bank" – the places thought to be richest in opals. If you are interesting in a share, you need to contact Bonanza Opal Mines by email or phone.

Juniper Ridge Fire Opal Mine is another mine that allows the general public to search for opals on a fee bases. The digging fee is $200 per person per day which gives you the right to dig for opals at the mine area and you are allowed to fill a one gallon bucket with raw gemstones. The mine operators at the Juniper Ridge Fire Opal Mine believe that any reasonably health and active adult should be able to fill a one gallon bucked within a single day. If you have more than one gallon bucket worth of material you can pay an additional fee or simply keep only the highest grade of opals to take home.

Before booking your opal treasure hunting trip, be sure to contact your local treasure hunting club to find information on what tools to bring. You can find out the contact information of your local club through the Federation of Metal Detectors and Archeologist Clubs, Inc. Often, your local Wal-Mart will have a display table or pamphlets from your local treasure hunting club available. Sometimes, there even will be club members manning the table so you can ask questions about opal treasure hunting.

Happy treasure hunting.

Treasure Hunting For Jade

By : David Cowley
Do you have a hankering to find some Jade but you do now want to travel to China or South America for it? Well you are in luck; you can just pick it off the ground from Jade Cove which is located about 65 miles south of Monterrey California.

When treasure hunters first discovered Jade at Jade Cove they came from all over to hammer and dynamite the large rocks on the cliffs. Large trucks with winches were used to drag the boulders up the cliffs doing serious damage to the beach and cliff areas.

Jade Cove is now protected and it has numerous regulations regarding the prospecting for jade that are strictly enforced. No tools are allowed, no collections above the high tide mark. It is a day use area only, so no camping. The trail leading down the cove is covers a 180 food drop is it is quite steep and treacherous and you are only allowed to remove what one man can carry out.

Scuba Diving

A shallow shelf slopes off the shore and runs through thick kelp beds. Fifty yards offshore is Cave Rock. Beneath 40 feet of water, it is the only underwater concentration of jade known in the world today. The cave runs parallel to the shore and in the cave is naturally polished pure green jade. It will be one of your most unforgettable diving experiences.

Two type of Jade is known. The first is Jadeite (sodium-rich aluminous pyroxene) and the other is Nephrite (calcium-rich magnesium, iron, aluminous amphibole). Both have a hardness rating between 6.5 and 7 on the mohs scale. They can be beautifully colored and have delicate shapes. Both were created under extreme pressure with relatively low temperatures.

Prehistoric man used jade for weapons and tools. It has the hardness of quarts and could be shaped into cutting type tools and weapons. China has been using jade since 3,000 B.C. The Mayan, Aztecs of Central America valued jade more highly that gold.

Other Places to Find Jade

In China, Nephrite can be found in a creamy white coloration known as Mutton Fat as well as the green variety. Jadeite can come in a more verity of colors such as blue, lavender, pink, black and emerald green. Jadeite is the rarer of the two and can be found only in about 12 places in the world.

Jade is the official gemstone of the state of Alaska where it has been found in the Kobuk river watershed at Jade Mountain. Outside of the Anchorage Visitor’s Center sits a two ton block of jade that was mined from the Kobuk area and donated to the state. Some fine green, white, and cats’ eye nephrite have been found in Alaska.

Wyoming has green and a golden brown variety of jade that is found in the chaparral and desert country around Lander.

Metaphysical

The metaphysical properties of jade include wisdom, justice, compassion, modesty, courage, beauty, longevity and female eroticism. Chinese often had the mouthpieces of the opium pipe carved out of jade in the belief that breathing smoke through jade would bestow longevity upon the smokers. Calligraphy brush handles were also made of jade so the user would gain wisdom when using it.

Happy Treasure Hunting.

Hotel booking

By : Alian Schiavoncini
The internet has made hotel reservations a simple task; no longer does a tourist have to call the travel desk of various hotels to make a hotel reservation. If you are planning on making hotel reservations online, here are few tips to help you choose the right hotel:
Front desk staffing
A quality hotel will ensure that their front desk is staffed 24x7. Before making a hotel reservation check to see if the front desk is staffed 24 hours a day, this will allow you to leave when you want and also get instructions on the night life of the place you are visiting.
Non-smoking rooms
If you are allergic to smoke or do not want to spend your vacation dealing with smokers, make sure the hotel you are dealing with offers non-smoking rooms. Although, most hotels have a strict no-smoking policy in their public rooms, make sure you understand the rules before making a hotel reservation.
Are pets allowed?
Not all hotels allow pets, and only a few hotels allow guests to keep pets in their rooms. If you are planning on travelling with pets, make sure you speak to the hotel staff before making a hotel reservation (also find out what size and species of pets are allowed in the hotel).
Check in check out times
Speak to the reservations department and find out the check in time and check out time before making any travel plans. You might end up paying extra for a couple of days if you do not plan your trip correctly. Most hotels have a 12 PM to 12 PM check out cycle, and if you plan your trip right you can save money. Also take time out to discuss the hotel’s policy for late check in, the last thing you want to do is pay extra because you checked in late.
What is the cancellation policy?
Before paying of the hotel reservation, make sure you find out about the cancellation charges. Each hotel has its own cancellation policy, and you can end up loosing a considerable amount of your initial payment in peak tourist season if you cancel at the last moment.
Check the hotel’s amenities
• Does the hotel have a restaurant or cafe?
• Does it have recreational facilities like a pool?
• Are there special facilities for children?
• Does each room have a phone and what are the local call charges?
• Does the hotel have business facilities like fax and internet access?
• What facilities are a part of the room service?
The biggest advantage of online hotel reservations is that a user can view the hotel’s facilities, look at 360 degree views of various rooms, and also know about popular tourist attractions located close to the hotel. In fact, online hotel reservations are much faster than hotel bookings via the phone or through travel agents. You might also be eligible for discounts if you make hotel reservations online and you should keep a look out for discounts.
How to find a great deal
The best way to get instant discounts is to search for discount coupons and websites that are offering online discounts. You might be eligible for corporate discounts and other special discounts, so make sure you speak to the reservation desk before making any payment. Contrary to popular belief, travel agents can also help you find hotels reservations at affordable rates (especially if they have been dealing with the hotel for a long time). If you are planning to stay in a location for a long time, make sure you discuss extended stay discounts with the hotel. However, your best bet is to shop around for discounted rates online and you will have the option of comparing rates instantly also.

Dubai - An Incomparable Destination

Dubai is one of the most popular tourist spots in the world. Situated on the Persian Gulf and bordering Sharjah to the north-east and Abu Dhabi to the south-west, Dubai is one of the seven emirates that make up the United Arab Emirates (UAE), which in turn is located on the Arabian Peninsula.

Located along a coastal strip and bordered by deserts, Dubai, otherwise called Dubai City, is the major as well as the capital city of the emirate of Dubai. In terms of area, Dubai is the second largest emirate, after Abu Dhabi, and population wise, Dubai is the largest of all emirates.

Once a typical desert destination, Dubai has now been transformed into an international level city, boasting of excellent infrastructure facilities, superb tourists' amenities, and above all, liberal laws and regulations. In addition, due to its strategic location which is just five hours fly from Europe and three hours fly from many of the Middle East countries and destinations such as India, Dubai attracts people from across the world. Further, the destination boasts of excellent accommodation and dining facilities, shopping options, sporting events, and incredible choices to indulge in an array of activities.

From archeological sites and beaches to museums, gardens, and amusement parks, Dubai comes with an array of attractions. For those who want to indulge in a number of recreational as well as water sport activities, then Dubai's beaches provide great opportunities. Beaches in Dubai are categorized into free public beaches and paid beach clubs. Khor Al-Mamzar, Kite Beach, Russian beach, and Umm Suqeim, are popular among the free public beaches in the area.

Most popular among the paid options in Dubai are Jumeirah Beach Park, Royal Mirage, and the Al Mamzar Beach Park. All of these options are attached with excellent facilities such as clean sea water and white sand, swimming pools, picnic areas, picnic tables and barbeques, and sheltered public beach. If you are a history buff, then the destination has some superb options to amuse you in the form of Jumeirah, Al Sufooh, and Al Ghusals, all of which have more than 2000 years old graveyards. Additionally, the archeological site in Jumeirah is home to a number of stone walls, ancient dwellings, huge stone house, and an old souk.

A trip to Dubai would not be complete without taking a tour to many of the interesting museums in the destination. For instance, the Dubai Museum, housed within the Al Fahidi Fort, has on display an array of art and artifacts that date back to 6th century BC. There are also artifacts that even date back to 3rd century BC. Equally worth mentioning is the art galleries in the region, such as, Majlis Art Gallery near the picturesque Bastakia Quarter, Creations Art Gallery at the Sheikh Zayed Road, Dubai International Art Center and Creative Art Center at the Jumeirah/Umm Sequim, Al Abbar Art gallery and Bagash Art Gallery in Bur Dubai, and the Hamarain Center in Deira.

If you are vacationing with your family and kids, then you should not miss to take a tour to some of the best amusement parks in the destination, such as, the Wild Wadi Water Park and Dubai Snow Park. All these serve as an excellent base for a perfect family vacation. Dubai's serene parks and gardens are also a best option for a perfect family vacation. Just few among many of the parks and gardens in the city are Creekside Park, Mushrif Park, ZA'Abeel Park, and Safa Park.

Other not to miss attractions in Dubai are Jumeirah Mosque, noted for its stupendous Islamic architecture; Palm - the world's largest man made island; Burj Dubai - the world's tallest building; Dubai Zoo, which is home to some rare species of animals such as Arabian Wolf; Bastakiya, dotted with a number of traditional courtyard-type houses; and the Heritage Village, where you can see weavers and potters engaged in their crafts.

Apart from these attractions, people touring the place can engage in a number of activities. For instance, if you are a golf enthusiast, then Dubai presents a range of golf courses of international standards, such as, Majilis Course, Wadi Course, and the Al Awir course.

Similarly, if you are looking for a unique experience, then take a desert safari tour, for which you can make use of services of tour operators. Above all, don't leave the destination without having some shopping. With a number of gold souk and options for buying items such as electronic, textile, and carpet items, Dubai is truly a shoppers' paradise.

Weather in Rome

By : leon lumsden
This time last year (July 2006), the temperature in Italy was hot, but after the record heat of June 2006, it was not surprising for many. However, August, (the month of the year where 99% of Italian's take their holidays), is supposed to be the hottest month of the year in Italy. Yet, over the last couple of years, (apparently as a result of Global Warming), the increase in temperature of the months June and July has seen a levelling out of the August heat and all three months receiving similar, to equal, record temperatures. This of course, can cause a somewhat adverse effect on tourism and may also lead to other problems for both Italians and foreign residents, including British expats like myself.

The effects upon tourism and the tourist industry could be numerous, though I will only mention a couple. Many people complain about hotel and apartment rates increasing, not only during the summer months, but throughout the whole year. And quite right I say, when there are 300 rooms with air-conditioning systems set to -5 degrees Celsius all day, (whilst the guests themselves are stripping off beside the pool trying to soak up every last heat ray that the sun exudes). Add to that, the fact that the hotter countries, including Italy, often experience troubles such as water shortages during the summer months. One cannot travel more than 20-30 kilometers outside of the center of Rome, without spotting a water tower; ready and waiting for such emergencies.

Then again, as a frequent traveller myself, I have to admit that I am amongst those who whinge about the cost of holidays and the annoying chamber maid that turned off my air-con again. I also complain after 3 days of staying in an air-conditioned room that my asthma is playing up and find myself, throughout the remainder of my holiday, popping anti-histamine tablets and taking my inhalers to counter the side-effects of my “cutting-my-nose-off-to-spite-my-own-face” overindulgence. (But that's part of being on holiday is it not?) I am of course trying my best to play devils advocate. But, again in favour of hotels, the hotter the weather, the more washing of sheets and towels the hotels are required to do as people sweat and consequentially shower/bathe more, (affecting the volume of water).

As far as the industry its self is concerned, yes; people do flock in their thousands, from the colder parts of the world to the heat, as soon as the summer months arrive, BUT, when you feel like the core of your body has turned into volcanic lava, are you really going to want a 10oz Sirloin Steak and all the trimmings for your dinner; or (to use Italy as an example) a 4-5 course dinner of starter, pasta dish, meat dish, dessert and coffee/spirit? I know that I personally lose 90% of my appetite for large and hot meals in the heat. Then again I do drink more, so do the restaurants and bars rely on this to make their money?

For residents, the temperatures can cause several problems. People taking time of work due to problems such as heat/sun stroke, problems with dehydration or people generally taking days off to go to the beach. Add to that, everything in Italy slows down. The Italians are well-known for being “laid-back” and “easy with time”, but the truth is that in the summer months, it's hard to get anything done. I know that I personally find it difficult to move some days without finding myself “glowing”. Older people in Italy are told to visit supermarkets and shopping centers to help them cool down. Last year I found myself looking forward to going to a well-known Italian meat supermarket, simply because the entire store is a freezer. The only problem was, I'd feel sick as soon as I stepped outdoors, as it was like jumping from Scotland to Italy. The heat, after the extreme cool, was thick and choking. Driving your car can be a nightmare, anywhere from not being able to plug in your seat belt or touch the steering wheel because they have been heated to melting point; to getting stuck in hot, sticky, airless traffic jams. Weeds and bushes on the sides of the road have been known to set on fire, by a combination of the sun drying them out and the heat from the tarred roads setting them alight. Occasionally there are problems with power-outages in homes and shops, because the generators, wires or transition boxes have overheated. Or how do you feel about brushing your teeth in hot water? The pros of course... if like me you are to tight-pursed that you refuse to fork out for air-conditioning, your power bill in the summer months can decrease to almost nothing in Italy. Unlike the old cold summers I used to endure when I lived in Scotland, there's no need to have your water heater on all day to take a shower or wash the dishes. No need for heating or lights on all day thanks to the light and heat of the sun. And finally, my personal favourites, you can put away your winter duvet at nights and enjoy the reduced quantity of laundry, thanks to the fact you wear less clothes and used less bed linen.

Now in 2007. This year, June was HOT. Very hot. By far, warmer than last year, but it followed a very wet April and May. July has been up and down. I am lucky to live north of Italy in the mountains where we get some breeze; but on a trip to the south of Rome (where I used to live also), to visit friends a few weeks ago, I realised just how lucky I really am. The change in temperature from the north to the south was uncanny. There was literally a 5-10 degree drop that day between my home in the north and my friends in the south. More shocking to me, was the change in air. Being situated in the countryside here in the north, higher up and surrounded by fields and trees etc. our air is fresh and soft on the nose and throat (terrible for any one with Hay-fever, but none the less a good clean air. In the south however; my friends live in a reasonably built up area, even the countryside full of houses and small repair garages and abandoned buildings. The air is thick, smoggy and hot. My father, on a trip to visit, once described it as holding a hair dryer in front of your face and I cannot think of a better explanation.

I cannot determine whether the increase in the temperature within Italy, or the effects; are caused by Global warming, or if we are quite simply receiving a freak weather change; but as an expat in Rome, I can say that the weather change is certainly noticeable. As for the effects, well I could be right I could be wrong, I cannot know, but I would like to hope that tourism and peoples desires to visit hotter countries such as Italy will not be affected too much, as Italy is a truly beautiful country to visit and with so much to enjoy and such easy access to low cost flights and airports and with the ease of self-booking thanks to teletext and the Internet; it would be a shame for the weather to spoil it all.

Paris The Capital City Of France Full Of Romance

By : Martyn Davis
Paris the Capital City of France is in the Ile De France region and is an international capital for art, fashion, style and romance.

With the romance that Paris perceives, it is the number one destination for UK tourists and with over 30 million travellers per year from around the world, it is no wonder that this city has so much to offer.

Paris entertainment has always been at the forefront of the world in terms of quality and variety and from film, dance, opera, jazz, concerts, ballet, rock festivals and cabaret, there is always some form of entertainment on offer to suit all tastes, no matter what the time of year you decide to visit this vibrant and cultural city in France.

There are two opera houses in Paris - the Opera Bastille and the Palais Garnier that hosts the Opera National de Paris. There are also many different rock venues in Paris that play host to a large number of international performers and Paris is also popular for its many dance clubs, nightclubs, and cabaret shows such as the Moulin Rouge, which has become famous throughout the world for its can-can, plus a multitude of different festivals that are held in Paris every year.

Of course, there are the usual monuments and attractions which we all go an see when visiting Paris, such as the Eiffel Tower, the Arc de Triomphe, the Notre Dame Cathedral, walking along the Avenue de Champs-Elysees with all its glitz and glamour and visiting the Bastille Square.

There are also some more recent landmarks that attract millions of visitors each year to Paris, such as La Grande Arche in the business district of La Defense or The Center Nationale d'Art et de Culture Georges Pompidou, also known simply as the Beaubourg or the Pompidou Centre.

Another attraction are the Catacombs of Paris, which are a famous burial place with its network of subterranean tunnels and rooms located underneath Paris and you can go on an official tour through the old quarries.

And the banks of the River Seine in Paris will offer visitors an unforgettable experience by being able to get to see the sights from a completely different perspective, while cruising in a boat and perhaps sampling the French cuisine at the same time.

However, for those of us who would like to get away from it all, the Ile de France region of which Paris is at the centre becomes an ideal place, offering a multitude of nature, history, art and culture, but all within only a short distance from the periphery.

So, within the Ile de France region, you be able to discover more than 500km of navigable waterways, as well as many more kilometres of footpaths and historic sites along its beautiful rivers and canals.

But not far from Paris in the Ile de France region you will discover rich picturesque countryside and forests all within a short distance of the periphery and it boasts three National Parks and four National Forests that allow you to get away from it all and enjoy the natural beauty of France along with the slow pace of French country life.

With stunning scenery, idyllic towns, peace and tranquillity, along with the abundant wildlife that await its visitors, it is the perfect setting for a drive in the country, an invigorating walk or a typical French picnic lunch in the open air.

And although Paris still tends to have that allure as a destination for lovers, there is also an enormous amount to do for children of all ages and the adults alike! Disneyland Paris with all of its magic is obviously one of those destinations, along with Parc Asterix, but there are also some great modern museums that provide interaction, making learning fun.

And from interesting, historic towns, to the centre of Paris, back to the forests and national parks, to amusements or glitz and glamour, Paris has something for everyone to enjoy, but make sure that you allocate enough time to experience this incredible region of France.
