Portland is in Victoria Australia

The city of Portland is the oldest European settlement in what is now the state of Victoria, Australia. It is located on Portland Bay. The city has a current population of around 12 000 and is situated at an elevation of 45 metres.

Prior to colonisation in the Western region of Victoria, the Kerrup Tjmara Aboriginal people were a sovereign, independent, an extremely healthy tribe. There are still signs of Aboriginal presence in the area, with the Lake Condah Mission displaying examples of lifestyle during that time.

For a number of years leading up to the Victorian gold rush, Portland vied with Melbourne for the status of major settlement of the southern region. Having lost the battle the port city has steadily developed over the past 156 years until today. Visitors will find that Portland offers most of the facilities of much larger cities, but combines them with a pristine natural environment and quality of life for residents rarely surpassed by any city.

It is the main urban centre of the Glenelg Shire. A notable feature of the town is its caves which are a popular tourist attraction.

In fact most residents would assert that, everything considered, Portland has emerged well in front from its early competition with Melbourne. As is evident from over 200 beautifully maintained heritage buildings and private residences in the City, Portland is proud of its history. Its a history which sees the city poised to take a leading role in its region and show that the settlers who made Portland Victorias Birthplace by the Sea chose the location wisely.

Millions of pounds of investment have been invested in providing new and fun things for tourists and locals alike to do. Families are welcomed in nearly all the attractions that the area has to offer, many of them offering specialist facilities for parents with young children.

If youre just coming down with a bunch of mates you will find endless things to do. Why not spend the day shopping and then spend the evening partying in one of many clubs and pubs.

Portland features many historic buildings and short stretches of beach fronting safe still waters, ideal for family recreation. Portland Bay is ideal for boating, fishing and sail boarding and there are many fine surfing spots in the area. The district is also profuse with outstanding natural attractions.

Weathers great most of the year. Come and have fun
