The city of Portland is the oldest European settlement in what is now the state of Victoria, Australia. It is located on Portland Bay. The city has a current population of around 12 000 and is situated at an elevation of 45 metres.
Prior to colonisation in the Western region of Victoria, the Kerrup Tjmara Aboriginal people were a sovereign, independent, an extremely healthy tribe. There are still signs of Aboriginal presence in the area, with the Lake Condah Mission displaying examples of lifestyle during that time.
For a number of years leading up to the Victorian gold rush, Portland vied with Melbourne for the status of major settlement of the southern region. Having lost the battle the port city has steadily developed over the past 156 years until today.
