Neuschwanstein Castle

This is the most romantic castle in all of the world. It is not very old but it could be the setting for every “happily ever after” fairy tale ever told.

Its beauty is legendary and well worth the steep stairs you have to climb to get to this breathtaking beauty. Nestled on a mountainside in Hohenschwangau in Bavaria, this castle is one of the most visited places in Germany. I have a picture of the castle in winter when it was covered in snow. The picture is too gorgeous to be real, but it is.

King Ludwig Ii, sometimes called Mad King Ludwig, built the castle between 1869 and 1886. Close to Germany’s border in Austria, the landscape is some of the most wonderful in Germany. Even if the Castle weren’t there the little town of Hohenschwangau would still be a great place to visit. The people are so friendly and the views are spectacular.

Disregard all of the tourist traps unless you like that kind of thing. The climb and descent to the castle is rigorous so don’t go if you have problems with stairs. There are special tours for the disabled on Wednesdays.

If you think this awe inspiring castle looks familar, it does bear a striking resemblance to Disney’s Sleeping Beauty Castle. You will be a little surprised at how modern the castle is inside. If you are used to real medieval castles, this one will shock you with its modern conveniences. After all King Ludwig didn’t want to create a castle he couldn’t enjoy living in.

Ludwig’s castle is a huge tourist spot. Don’t be surprised when you get there and you see hordes of tourists. Everyone simply loves this castle. After all isn’t that why you went. Enjoy the enchantment of Mad King Ludwig’s Castle and don’t forget to take a lot of pictures.
